Welcome to the NES/MAA! The Mathematical Association of America (MAA) is the largest
professional society that focuses on undergraduate mathematics education. Our
members include university, college, and high school teachers; graduate and
undergraduate students; pure and applied mathematicians; computer scientists;
statisticians; and many others in academia, government, business, and
industry. We welcome all who are interested in the mathematical sciences. The mission of the MAA is "to advance the mathematical
sciences, especially at the collegiate level." The Northeastern Section of the MAA includes the six New England
States of Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, and
Vermont and the four Canadian Provinces of New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova

CT 06825-1000 Solomon Friedberg wins the 2009 NES Teaching Award The Section is delighted to announce that Solomon Friedberg of
Boston College is the winner of the 2009 Northeastern Section Award for
Distinguished College or University Teaching. His students and colleagues
praise him not only for his enthusiasm and skill in the classroom, but also
for his commitment to his students and accessibility outside the classroom.
In addition, he has organized a nationwide effort to improve the teaching of
the next generation of college and university faculty by creating innovative
materials to promote effective teaching among current graduate students. A full description of some of Professor Friedberg's
accomplishments and impact will be in the Section's Spring Newsletter.
