Bias Response Protocol

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​As part of the College's on-going efforts to promote an enhanced understanding of, and respect for, diversity in its many forms, the College has established the Bias Response Protocol (BRP) as a framework to respond effectively to incidents of bias, or perceived bias.  The BRP is one of several initiatives with the goal of promoting a campus climate in which all members thrive personally, professionally, and academically.  For more information, please visit the website of the Office of In​stitutional Diversity​.

​To be clear, this process is in no way intended to curb the free expression of opinions or ideas.  In fact, we hope that the effective implementation of the protocol will contribute to a campus climate that encourages dialogue around challenging issues.  The protocol does not replace any existing policies or procedures.

​How the Protocol Works

  1. The Associate Vice President/Chief Diversity Officer (AVP/CDO​​) is promptly informed of all suspected incidents of bias, including those reported to the Providence College Department of Public Safety​, and members of the Bias Response Team (BRT)​​​​​​.
  2. The AVP/CDO, in consultation with the Executive Vice President (EVP), will assess reports in consultation with appropriate colleagues (for example, the Office of Academic Affairs, the Office of the General Counsel, the Office of Human Resources, the Division of Student Affairs, the Division of Finance and Business, the Division of Institutional Advancement, the Office of Mission and Ministry, and the Office of Public Affairs and Community Relations) and convene the BRT as necessary.
  3. When convened, the BRT, in consultation with the EVP, will consider the gravity of each reported incident, determine what, if any, information should be communicated to the campus community, relay a comprehensive institutional response and follow-up, provide support to alleged victims and alleged offenders (when identified), and suggest ways to address proactively issues of difference, diversity, civility, and respect via education and training.
  4. Disciplinary action against any individual or group, if warranted, will be governed by established policies and procedures, and codes of conduct.  State or local law enforcement agencies also may become involved as deemed appropriate.
  5. BRT members, and other persons responsible for receiving and acting on bias-incident reports, will make reasonable efforts to protect the confidentiality and privacy of the reporter, the accused person(s), and any witnesses.  Disclosure of information will be made only to persons with a need for information regarding the report, its investigation, and/or resolution.
