Students for Social Action (SSA)

ssa1Students for Social Action (SSA) is a student organization made up primarily of social work majors as well as other active students on campus who are interested in community service and social justice. The club has a membership of approximately 30 members, ranging in all class years and majors. The open membership of the club serves to support the interests of prospective social work majors and those from other majors who share social work's compassion for humankind, concerns for social and economic justice, and commitment to service.

Throughout the year, Students for Social Action raises funds and collects goods to benefit projects of various community agencies--Thanksgiving food drive, holiday adopt-a-family, socks and personal care items for homeless shelters. Clothing drives as well as food drives are important to club members, as it is a direct way to help many people.

The club is very active. We have participated in preparing and serving lunch to the residents at St. Mary's Foster Home. The residents were excited interact with college students, and the club was excited to get into the community. Students for Social action has also run two Bread Lines events this year where the club serves food to the homeless at the Beneficent Church and outside of the Cross Roads Homeless Shelter.ssa2

At Christmas time, club members came together to celebrate the holidays at Capital Ridge Assisted Living home and sang carols to elders suffering from Alzheimer's disease. The club has participated in Relay For Life, a nationwide over night fundraiser to support cancer research. Members fundraised individually, as well as collectively, by having bake sales and contacting friends and family.

SSA members have planned holiday parties with the children at Smith Hill, as well as have taught a lesson on the importance of planting and taking care of our environment. The activities through Students for Social Action are always fun and meaningful. Join us in making a difference in the Providence community today!
