Who We Are
The Student Multicultural Activities Office is a unit under Student Affairs with the Balfour Unity Center as a physical space located in the lower level of Slavin Center for students to gather together for meetings, study and fun. All students are welcome to connect with, participate in and be involved with many of the programs and opportunities organized and sponsored by Student Multicultural Activities.
Our ultimate vision is to create opportunities for students to broaden and deepen their cultural competence through inclusive excellence by:
- learning about and valuing difference
- cultivating and practicing curiosity and compassion through listening, asking questions and sharing stories
- developing and providing resources for action and advocacy framed by Catholic Social Teaching and tradition
We also support students from under-represented groups with various program and activities such as the annual Horizons Fall Retreat geared towards first year students of color and international students.
During orientation in 2011 and 2012, we introduced Lee Mun Wah, a renowned diversity trainer and teacher, to first year students and he talked to them about the value of diversity and how to engage with greater intention with those we do not know and who may differ from us. He emphasized that one of the most helpful and affirming statements we can say is, “Tell me more…” Our hope and prayer that it may it be so for students at Providence College as they make their way on campus and be transformed as they invest their time and energy in their studies, in service and in one another.
"When we engage people who are different than we are, we inevitably learn something
about grace, about generosity, courage and ease."

The Lord God has told us what is right and what he demands: “See that justice is done, let mercy be your first concern, and humbly obey your God.”
