Teacher Certification Program (TCP)

The Teacher Certification Program offered by the Providence College School of Continuing Education (SCE) is designed for individuals who wish to pursue a career in teaching at the secondary level. Most candidates have earned a bachelor's degree prior to gaining admission. However, this program enables candidates who are working toward a bachelor's degree (at Providence College) to gain certification. The School of Continuing Education has a transfer agreement with Community College of Rhode Island and candidates may earn a B.A. in Liberal Studies while gaining their certification.

The program leads to certification in biology, chemistry, English, French, history, Italian, mathematics, physics, social studies or Spanish. Candidates must complete 30 credits or more in one of these disciplines as well as the required education courses.

The Teacher Certification Program meets the Rhode Island Beginning Teacher Standards. Program requirements include:

  • successful completion of 18 credit hours of professional education courses
  • a 12-week (nine credit- hour) student teaching internship
  • passing scores on the PRAXIS examinations
  • ongoing construction of a student portfolio reflective of the Rhode Island Professional Teaching Standards
  • final recommendation for licensure

Once candidates complete the approved program they will be eligible to receive secondary school teacher certification in Rhode Island, which qualifies them for the Rhode Island Certification Reciprocity Agreement with 46 other states.

Information for New Students:

CCRI Students: SCE and the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) have entered into a transfer agreement. Students wishing to become a teacher may earn their associate's at CCRI and apply their credits toward both the B.A. in Liberal Studies and the Teacher Certification Program (TCP) offered by SCE.
