Things to Consider

Advising requires periodically considering the following issues and how they relate to a student organization and its members:

•    Membership – Understanding who the members are and how involved they wish to be

•    Purpose – Understanding the purpose of the group and what members want to get out of their
involvement

•    Needs – Understanding the needs of the group and your role in helping to ensure fulfillment of those needs

•    Goals – Evaluating the goals initially set out by the group in their constitution and whether those goals still fi t today

•    Advisor/Group Fit – Understanding both your expectations, needs, and interests, as well as those of the group, and whether/how each fi t together

•    Adapting – Acknowledging that student organizations and advisors must continue to adapt to changing times and a changing campus community’s needs - and taking steps to ensure both are doing so (this could include personal assessment, campus-wide assessment, professional development experiences, and benchmarking with similar groups on campus and at other colleges and universities)
