Best Practices
• Show enthusiasm in the organization and its activities
• Encourage communication
• Be receptive to feedback and clear about expectations
• Be prepared to fulfill the expectations of your advisees (recognizing the time commitment this may take)
• Listen during meetings, asking questions to increase dialogue and encourage new perspectives
• Encourage co-sponsorship to avoid repeat events and stretched budgets
• Encourage executive board members to meet with new officers prior to a transition and prepare a binder of records and information for future leaders
• Remember that it is far better to ask questions of others than to misinform your advisees
• Use the SAIL Office as a resource for event planning/advising, and encourage your advisees to do the same
• Remember that a balanced advising relationship does not mean becoming “one of the group” or being unapproachable
