Advising Student Organizations
Involvement in student
organizations and activities is an integral part of the collegiate experience
and overall student development. Students who participate in clubs and
organizations gain practical skills and knowledge which enhance their academic
life, and ultimately, their life after college.
Behind every successful student
organization stands a first-rate advisor with a genuine interest in the group,
its members, its mission, and continued progress in meeting its goals. Advisors
have the opportunity to develop positive relationships with student leaders
outside the classroom and to gain a greater understanding of student life. As
experienced leaders, advisors should provide insight to students, inspiring
groups to consider new perspectives and directions. Good advising rewards both
the student organization and its advisor in a number of ways as a result of
working with our diversely talented student leaders.
The purpose of the advisor is to
work with a student organization with the aim of:
-
assisting leaders and group members in the
fulfillment of their responsibilities
-
helping to define and achieve its mission and
goals
-
ensuring that the group’s activities fit with
the institution’s mission and goals*
The SAIL Office would like to
thank you for taking the time and effort to work with our student leaders. We
see this handbook as a resource for you throughout the advising process, and
hope that you find your advising experience to be a positive compliment to your
everyday responsibilities on campus.
