Service
Many of the health related experiences described above are also forms of service. However, a commitment to service can be demonstrated by non-health related activities as well, such as:
Tutoring
Serving as a resident assistant in a dormitory
Lab assisting
Community and church related service activities
College service organizations and projects such as Habitat for Humanity, Big Brothers/Sisters, among others.
It is important to remember that service to others should be something you enjoy, and a continuing commitment.
Leadership skills
Leadership skills are difficult to quantify. Leaders:
Perform well in groups by contributing and helping others contribute, not by taking center stage
Are sportsmanlike on athletic teams – you don’t need to be the captain
Cooperate, assist others, and encourage participation of all members in lab or class project groups
Interact on research projects to ensure productivity of the whole research team.
Participate in class rather than remaining quietly anonymous.
