Service

Many of the health related experiences described above are also forms of service.  However, a commitment to service can be demonstrated by non-health related activities as well, such as:

  • Tutoring
  • Serving as a resident assistant in a dormitory
  • Lab assisting
  • Community and church related service activities
  • College service organizations and projects such as Habitat for Humanity, Big Brothers/Sisters, among others.

It is important to remember that service to others should be something you enjoy, and a continuing commitment.

Leadership skills

Leadership skills are difficult to quantify.  Leaders:

  • Perform well in groups by contributing and helping others contribute, not by taking center stage
  • Are sportsmanlike on athletic teams – you don’t need to be the captain
  • Cooperate, assist others, and encourage participation of all members in lab or class project groups
  • Interact on research projects to ensure productivity of the whole research team.
  • Participate in class rather than remaining quietly anonymous.
