Legal Issues Regarding Therapeutic Abortion

The map below is a compilation of the information at Harvard Law's Annual Review, the Center for Reproductive Rights, and Pregnant Pause. The first is academic, the second is pro-choice, and the third is pro-life. Click here or on the map itself to open up the full-size map in a new window.

On the map, a country colored black represents that country having a complete ban on abortion. Generally, purple equals protection of a woman's life; blue - life and physical health; green - life and physical & mental health; yellow for socioeconomic (non-therapeutic, but for cases when the woman would be unable to raise the child); and orange for few restrictions (or what essentially amounts to the right to an elective abortion). Bhutan is red because the law is vague. The color-coding is not perfect due to differences in restrictions regarding the stage of pregnancy and the issue of rape (some nations associate it with mental or physical health, while others link it more to socioeconomic issues).
