History of Urban Housing

What is to be done when people desire better housing but cannot afford it? This is a problem which has plagued America in the last century.

Increasingly since the 1960's, governments at all levels (from federal to municipal) have attempted to work more with Community Development Corporations(CDC) to rehabilitate urban communities. As non-profit organizations, CDC's (for the most part) are headed by members of communities dedicated to improving the quality of their neighborhoods. Although this organization is fueled by mostly local residents, they cooperate with government officials to implement and create policies in order to further their cause. Not only do CDC's provide social services such as employment strategies and day care they are also dedicated to the regeneration of dilapidated housing.

During the seventies and eighties, there was an attempt to revitalize urban housing in Providence. However, there was a real estate bust in the eighties which put an end to this development. Consequently, vandals proceeded to destroy vacant houses which were in the process of being built or renovated.

This is where OMNI Development enters the picture. They are making an effort to pick up where the old organizations had left off. They are once again trying to breathe some life into dilapidated areas of Providence.
