India Point Park, Providence, RI: Current Issues

This site intends to present the user with concise and accurate information regarding two of the largest issues facing India Point Park in 2004: the Interstate-195 relocation, and the debate over the possible burial of the twelve high tension towers that run through the park.

India Point Park offers eighteen acres of fantastic views of Providence, Rhode Island's East Bay. Nearly 75,000 people use the park every year, and thousands more see the park every day on their commute through Interstate 195. Because of its extensive use, issues facing the park can easily become controversial to residents of the nearby Fox Point neighborhood, Providence, and even Rhode Island.

In the 18th and 19th century, before it became a park, India Point was used as a port for trading vessels and as a landing dock for steamships carrying immigrants. The current park, which was championed by Mary Elizabeth Sharpe, was created in 1974 out of railroad beds and abandoned land.
