It is arguable whether the base of the Freedom Party’s
international attention is due to Jorg Haider’s political remarks
or the FPO’s platform. However, the party’s stance against
immigration certainly does draw attention. The FPO states their platform
clearly on their website in a section marked “Dafuer Stehen Wir
(We Stand for This).” The following is a selection of the FPO platform,
and, for cases in which there are strong international criticisms, a
synopsis of the opposite points of view.
The FPO and Limited Immigration
The FPO believes in the strict
enforcement of existing immigration laws. Each potential immigrant,
they feel, should be required to prove
that they have a job and accommodation. They also believe in
actively searching
out and deporting all illegal immigrants in Austria, deporting
legal immigrants guilty of any crime, and mandating all aliens
carry state-issued
identification. The party disagrees with the current practice
of granting citizenship before a 10 year waiting period has passed.
Those who oppose this stance from other nations, parties,
and in the press say the message is hateful and preaches non-tolerance.
The stance believes
using Nazi-era words like "Uberfremdung" (roughly "over-foreignerization")
on FPO posters is a xenophobic and deplorable action.
The FPO and the EU
Inter-governmental reform conferences determine the amount of power
the European Union. The FPO fears Europe becoming a confederation of
states
in which the member countries lose sovereignty. The party wishes
to limit the flow of power to the Brussels.
Those who favor a strong EU agree a strong union between
the member countries will create advancement for each country
involved.
To compound the differences between the groups,
a major part of the
EU’s union is free movement across country lines, a
conflict with the FPO’s immigration stance.
Other FPO issues include the economy, the family,
instituting minimum wage, and trimming government size. The party believes
in privatizing
all of the economy. They believe in giving fewer tax breaks,
requiring research and development as the
only reason to give such breaks. Many of the FPO’s stances
revolve around the family. There is push from the party to cut
taxes for single
income families, thereby putting more emphasis on parenting in
two-parent homes. They agree with mandating a minimum wage where
all workers earn
at least 1,000 euro per month. The FPO is against large, centralized
power and wishes to keep government bureaucracy minimalized.
