Bob Trudeau, Professor of Political Science, Providence
College
I just completed several hours of workshop in NUD*IST4, led by
Ray Maietta, this past Saturday, here at Providence College. It was
an excellent workshop. I appreciated Ray's personal skills: being
able to remember, without flaw, the names and research interests of a
dozen strangers, from the beginning. I appreciated his teaching
skills -- and as a former director of a Center for Teaching
Excellence, I tend to watch for these things -- he treated the
exercise conceptually, in a non-linear fashion albeit with a clear
outline. He responded to questions appropriately, even when that took
us down a line he may have wanted to save for later; i.e. he took
advantage of the "teaching/learning moments" as they occurred. He did
NOT do a follow the book routine, nor did he do the ten easy steps
routine, but instead started from where we were starting, with our
research questions, leading us from there into the relevant steps in
NUD*IST4. Finally, there was enough hands-on work on the computers to
give us a sense of how it works, and at least in my case, to want to
do more. For me, the whole exercise was extremely helpful, and given
that this is on a Saturday near the end of the semester, that's
saying a lot. In thirty years of university level teaching, I've been
to (and conducted) a lot of workshops, believe me. This one was
excellent, among the best I've experienced.
Debbie Goessling, Assistant Professor of Education, Providence
College
The NUDIST workshop on Saturday December 11 with Ray was
outstanding. He helped a computer phobic professor and gave her
confidence to use NUDIST. He not only talked about technology but he
wove his comments with qualititative methodology. The materials
provided were excellent. I can't wait to try our all the new nodes
after Christmas. Thanks for bringing him here to Providence College,
it has given but struggling research a needed boost.
Lawrence Shulman, Dean and Professor, School of Social Work,
University at Buffalo (SUNY).
I found the day so helpful that I have booked Ray and two of his
assistants to come to our school in February for a two day workshop.
I announced it to our faculty and Ph.D. students and I have already
filled the 24 available spaces. An overwhelming positive response to
the idea (it's a Friday and Saturday) and an example of what I (as a
Dean) can do to help my faculty and Ph.D. students develop the skills
necessary to expand their research horizons. It will easily pay off
in their future external funding efforts.
Stuart Shulman, Adjunct Assistant Professor of Political
Science, Providence College:
Ray did a wonderful job. The workshop moved at a good pace and in
ways that showed great pedagogical care and expertise. I liked the
format, particularly the way in which we shifted back and forth
between discussion, lecture, demonstration and guided activities.
Ray's quick ability to learn the participants names and speak
directly to their comments was impressive. I liked it that he could
integrate different participants questions and comments into a
coherent description of what we needed to know, and why we needed to
know it. Every participant commented to me on the excellence of the
training. The breadth of his knowledge in this field was obvious to
all. I look forward to working with Ray in the future.
