Summary Biography
Dr. McCarthy's areas of study include comparative politics, Chinese politics and nationalism, with a specific focus on issues of religious, ethnic and cultural identity. Prior to her professional career, Dr. McCarthy spent a few years teaching English abroad in China’s Yunnan province in 1988-89 and on the other side of the straits in Taiwan, from 1989-1991. She is currently working on an article about Islamic education and concepts of Muslim authenticity in China, and is in the process of organizing her dissertation on the politics of the post-Mao minority cultural revival into book form. Dr. McCarthy is also the Truman Scholarship representative for PC, the department’s Pi Sigma Alpha advisor, and has been a member of the college’s committees on post-baccalaureate scholarship, women’s studies, and Asian studies. She also served on the college-wide Core Curriculum Review Committee.
  Dr. McCarthy’s literary favorites include Edith Wharton, Jane Austen, Alexander McCall Smith, Loorie Moore and any other historical fiction or mysteries. She proudly admits to watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer and 24, and is an avid fan of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. On the weekend, Dr. McCarthy sightings usually occur on New England’s snowiest slopes or its trendiest swing dancing hotspots. Keep your eyes peeled!
Dr. McCarthy will be on sabbatical leave during the 2007-2008 academic year. |
