Summary Biography

      Ruth Ben-Artzi joined the political science faculty at Providence College in the fall of 2006. She received her PhD from Columbia University in 2005 and a bachelor's degree from the University of Haifa in Israel in 1994. From 2004 to 2006 she was a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Browne Center for International Politics at the University of Pennsylvania.

      Dr. Ben-Artzi's areas of study include international political economy, international relations theory and Middle East Politics. She is particularly interested in the work of international financial institutions and their effects on development in poor countries. She is currently working on her manuscript, Banking on Development: The Great Expectations of Regional Development Banks, as well as a number of articles on aid and development. In 2001 Dr. Ben-Artzi spent a year as a visiting fellow at Sciences-Po, in Paris, and in 2002-3 she was a visiting assistant professor of political science at Hunter College, CUNY. Dr. Ben-Artzi's research has been supported by Columbia's Presidential Fellowship, The Center for Business Education at Columbia University, Sciences-Po, the Browne Center for International Relations at the University of Pennsylvania, and the CAFR grant at Providence College.

      Prior to enrolling in graduate school, Dr. Ben-Artzi worked as a research assistant at the OECD in Paris where she also received a diploma in French Language and Civilization from the Sorbonne; was a director at the Peace Now movement in Israel; and a campaign coordinator for Meretz (the civil rights movement) in the 1996 Israeli elections. Dr. Ben-Artzi has been involved in development issues since her college days - serving on the board of the Society for International Development in Israel and in New York City, and participating in development related seminars funded by the UNDP, the Ford Foundation and the Council of Europe.
