There are twelve distinct
programs from which to choose: American Politics; Economic Policy;
Foreign Policy; International Business and Trade; International
Law and Organization; International Environment and Development; Israel
Studies; Journalism; Justice, Peace and Conflict Resolution; Public
Law; Transforming Communities.
The Washington Semester Program offered by American University is available
on a competitive basis to four Providence College juniors or first semester
seniors each academic year. A Providence College faculty committee selects
the PC participants. Those wishing to apply for either the Fall 2008 semester
or the Spring 2009 semester need to submit the following material by February
1, 2008 to the campus advisor. Do NOT send applications directly to American
University.
•
A cover letter addressed to the PC campus advisor expressing your interest
in and preparation for the program. You should indicate how the semester
in Washington would contribute to your education in ways not available on
campus, why you have selected a specific program of study, and any other
information about yourself that you think will help the committee make its
decision.
• A completed American University application form, available from
the campus advisor.
• A description of the independent study project to be undertaken
in Washington. (All Providence College students are required to complete
the independent study project option of the Washington Semester curriculum.)
• A current Providence College transcript. (Students must have at
least 2.5 GPA to apply).
• A completed “Projected Studies Plan” form available
from the Dean’s Office. The completed form must be approved and signed
by the Chair of your major department, the Chair of your minor department
(if applicable), and a Dean.
• In addition, applicants may be required to attend an interview
session with the committee that chooses the participants.
• Students should talk with the financial aid office at Providence
College about portability of aid and with the office of Residence Life at
Providence College about single semester on-campus living arrangements.
