Spring Career Fair and Networking Night Lend Support to Students
Providence College’s Office of Career Services recently hosted more than 80 private, public, and non-profit organizations for its annual Spring Career Fair.
More than 200 students attended the fair, which attracted top firms such as Deloitte, Ernst and Young, and Fidelity Investments, and which brought in service organizations such as the Peace Corps, Rhode Island Campus Compact, and Save The Bay, Inc.
Government organizations also were well represented, with representatives from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, as well as the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency.
“The Spring Career Fair gave students the opportunity to speak to employers about internship and entry-level job openings, as well as learn more about the specific organizations,” said Patti Goff, director of the Office of Career Services. “It also showed that despite the constant media coverage of the down economy, the job market is improving annually and there are positions available.”
The alumni clubs of Greater Providence (Mal Brown) also hosted a Alumni-Student Networking Night recently along with Career Services. More than 35 graduates came to offer their advice to those students in attendance.
These alumni varied in their professional roles, including toy creators, development officers, political staffers, and even a Rhode Island State Police trooper.
The highlight of the night was keynote speaker H. Kirk Bozigian ’73, adjunct professor of marketing at PC and head marketer and inventor at HKB Ideas, a combat marketing company he founded. Bozigian is also known for reinventing the famed boys’ action figure toy line, G.I. Joe.
Bozigian emphasized the importance of networking within the PC community, especially as a means of career development.
“As I tell all my students, your networking begins here at Providence College. Someday, you will pick up the phone, or send an e-mail, asking a classmate for help,” he said.
Bozigian also encouraged students to create their own brand and to market themselves through personal blogs, customized business cards, and social media sites such as Tumblr, Facebook, and most importantly, LinkedIn.
