Disciplinary Knowledge: The foundation of successful managers
is rooted in their understanding and application of their disciplinary
knowledge of management concepts and theories. To prepare themselves for
a successful career in the business world, students must demonstrate competence
in the theory and practice of management. Although student's particular
areas of concentration within the major may vary, all management majors
must develop an understanding of management principles in order to successfully
manage organizations in today's changing global business environment.
Oral and Written Communication: Recent surveys have concluded that
employers view effective communication as a critical factor in evaluating
candidates in a competitive job market. Students majoring in Management
must demonstrate effective use of language in both written and oral assignments
within their coursework in the department. To satisfy their requirement,
students must demonstrate that their written work meets commonly accepted
grammatical, stylistic and organizational standards for business communication.
Teamwork: Leading businesses today stress the importance of teamwork
and the use of teams to solve business problems. To prepare themselves
to succeed in a changing economy, graduates of the Management Department
must develop their ability to function effectively as team members, in
order to solve problems in a collaborative fashion.
Information Technology: The use of computers and information systems
is a critical component for the success of most businesses today. All
management majors must be proficient in applying the latest information
technology to their area of study. Students must demonstrate their knowledge
of software applications and information gathering tools that are commonly
used within business and industry. Students must also demonstrate their
skill in evaluating a business problem and applying alternative information/systems
solutions.
Qualitative and Quantitative Reasoning: The ability to gather, analyze,
and interpret data is essential to the success of any business enterprise.
Students in the Department of Management must develop essential skills
to prepare them to evaluate and apply quantitative information and making
qualitative business decisions. Students must understand what types of
data and inputs are required to make informed business decisions, and
be able to apply critical thinking skills when researching and analyzing
business situations.
