Noted Theologian and Today Show News Correspondent to Speak at Providence College


Providence, R.I. – As part of Alumni and Family Weekend February 10 – 12, 2012, Providence College will host a signature event entitled “Journey to the Heart of Faith” featuring prominent theologian Father Robert Barron and NBC-TV’s Today Show veteran correspondent Mike Leonard ’70. The event will take place on Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. in the Peterson Recreation Center on campus.

Fr. Barron and Leonard will discuss their recent collaboration on Catholicism, a multi-part documentary series illustrating the story of the Catholic Faith. The television production, filmed in 50 locations throughout 15 countries, examines the history and treasures of a global religion shared by more than one billion people. Fr. Barron was the creator and host of the series, while Leonard served as executive producer of the project. Together, they spent two years traveling the world with a crew of seasoned network television producers.

An acclaimed author, speaker, and theologian from Western Springs, Illinois, Fr. Barron is the Francis Cardinal George Professor of Faith and Culture at Mundelein Seminary near Chicago. He also is the founder of Word On Fire, a global, non-profit media group. Ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago in 1986, he has published numerous books, essays, and DVD programs. He is a frequent commentator on faith and culture for The Chicago Tribune, NBC Nightly News, FOX News, Our Sunday Visitor, The Catholic Herald in London, The Washington Post, CNN and The Catholic New World. Fr. Barron lectures extensively in the United States and abroad, including the Pontifical North American College at the Vatican and the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome. He received a master's degree in philosophy from the Catholic University of America and a doctorate in Sacred Theology from the Institut Catholique de Paris.

Leonard is an acclaimed filmmaker and author of the New York Times best-selling book The Ride of Our Lives: Roadside Lessons of an American Family (2006, Ballantine Books). His family’s company, Picture Show Films, co-produced Catholicism. Picture Show has also produced critically acclaimed television shows and specials for PBS and ESPN. He received his bachelor’s degree in economics from Providence College.
