Providence, R.I. – The Providence College Faculty Senate passed the following resolution at their weekly meeting (Wednesday, March 9, 2016):
Support for and Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion at Providence College
RESOLVED: In response to reports of racial inequality on campus, the Faculty Senate of Providence College pledges its active support of ongoing initiatives to improve the campus climate for students, faculty, and staff of color. In accordance with the mission of Providence College, we condemn discrimination on the basis of race, color, sex, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, disability, and national origin, and seek to remedy those practices, systems, and structures on campus that serve to marginalize underrepresented groups. We further pledge active articulation of and commitment to enacting substantive reforms in concert with the student community, the faculty, the administration, and Faculty Senate Committees charged with specific action on student demands.
RATIONALE: Students and faculty, many of whom have been victims of profiling, discrimination, intimidation, and harassment, have communicated their desire for the administration to enact a series of reforms that would help to make this campus a more inclusive and less threatening environment. As faculty representatives, we recognize our responsibilities toward promoting equality and a safe learning environment for all students. Although specific changes the Faculty Senate might enact will be preceded with due discussion and debate, we commit ourselves to being proactive in our consideration and enactment of reforms consistent with the mission of Providence College and that will enrich the common good and human flourishing of each member of the campus community.
