Welcome to the NES/MAA!

The Mathematical Association of America (MAA) is the largest professional society that focuses on undergraduate mathematics education. Our members include university, college, and high school teachers; graduate and undergraduate students; pure and applied mathematicians; computer scientists; statisticians; and many others in academia, government, business, and industry. We welcome all who are interested in the mathematical sciences.

The mission of the MAA is "to advance the mathematical sciences, especially at the collegiate level."

The Northeastern Section of the MAA includes the six New England States of Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont and the four Canadian Provinces of New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island.

Solomon Friedberg wins the 2009 NES Teaching Award

The Section is delighted to announce that Solomon Friedberg of Boston College is the winner of the 2009 Northeastern Section Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching. His students and colleagues praise him not only for his enthusiasm and skill in the classroom, but also for his commitment to his students and accessibility outside the classroom. In addition, he has organized a nationwide effort to improve the teaching of the next generation of college and university faculty by creating innovative materials to promote effective teaching among current graduate students.

A full description of some of Professor Friedberg's accomplishments and impact will be in the Section's Spring Newsletter. Congratulations Professor Friedberg!
