Providence College's student newspaper, The Cowl, began publication on November 16th, 1935. It has been published continously during each academic year since then, with the exception of the years 1944 and 1945, when concerns over World War II overshadowed campus events.

The Cowl Online Archive project was undertaken to convert all available archived issues of the newspaper into fully text-searchable documents, using a "flip-book" viewer from a free, publicly available desktop publishing website.

Issues from the paper's inaugural year of 1935-1936 were digitized first, and issues from the 1960's and 1970's are now being processed. Work will continue until all archived issues are available for online viewing.
