Books

The Library uses the Library of Congress shelving arrangement.

To search the HELIN catalog using select LC Subject headings, use the specific term first followed by the term, German. For example, use, without the quotes, 'Arts, German' not 'German Arts' or 'Folk poetry, German' not 'German folk poetry'. If your searching for materials relating to a geographical area, follow the same format.

When searching for information on historical events, such as the German Revolution of 1848, the use of the term 'Germany' achieves better results. For example, use, 'Germany, Revolution, 1848-1849' not 'Revolution of 1848 in Germany'.

For a listing of LC Subject headings, the library has a complete set of the Library of Congress Subject Headings available at the ready reference desk of the Information Station.
