Anti-Virus Information

How do I get infected?

Malware can infect your computer via e-mail, websites, pop-ups, advertisements, peer-to-peer programs
or infected USB or thumb drives. Some websites may ask you to install what seems like legitimate software, but you should never install something unless you are absolutely positive it is safe. Some advertisements may tell you that you are infected and suggest you buy and download a product to clean your computer. More often than not these are not legitimate and will cause more harm. Certain peer-to-peer download programs such as Limewire or BearShare may transfer infected files. Other download programs that use torrents may also contain viruses.

How can I protect myself?

Always be sure your computer is up-to-date with windows updates and you have an anti-virus software installed. Providence College offers McAfee Antivirus Enterprise for all students free of charge. If you are on campus, you can download it here. Practice safe internet browsing by not clicking on links you are not certain of, and never trust a website to install software you are uncertain about. Only trust messages from your own personal anti-virus program.
