Software Availabililty

How do I install software if I don't have a CD/DVD drive?

Visit the Helpdesk in Accinno 115 and we can assist with an external drive.

What software is available for students?

Students can buy the latest version of Microsoft Office for MacOS X or Windows or the latest version of Microsoft Windows for $25. The software can be downloaded from http://providence.onthehub.com. Be sure to register using your Providence College email account.

What software is available for faculty and staff?

The following is a list of the software we have available for faculty and staff. If you are interested in having it installed, please contact the Helpdesk at x4357 or by email at helpdesk@providence.edu.

Software for Windows

Microsoft Windows
Microsoft Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7 are available to school-owned and personal machines. For college-owned machines we recommend staying on the standard version as the rest of the campus; as of this writing, that is Windows XP. On-campus upgrades to different versions will be handled on a case-by-case basis. For Windows XP and Vista, discs may be checked out from the IT Department Main Office; for Windows 7, faculty and staff may get DVD from Ed Morin.

Microsoft Office
Available for college-owned and personal computers. You may check discs out from the IT Department Main Office in Accinno 115 to install on personal computers. Contact the Helpdesk if you wish to have it installed on a college-owned computer.

Available for college-owned computers. Contact the Helpdesk to have it installed.

Standard & Poor's Research Insight
Available for on-campus use only. Contact the Helpdesk to have it installed.

SAS Statistical Software
We have limited copies available for college-owned computers.

SPSS (aka PASW) Statistical Software
Available for college-owned and personal computers. Computers connected to the campus network will be configured with a network-licensed version, and reauthorization will not be required. If installed on a laptop or home computer, the software will need an authorization code entered once per year; new codes are available in August when we renew our license. You may check disks out from the IT Department Main Office to install on personal computers.

Quark XPress
We have 30 concurrent use licenses. It can be installed on any on-campus computer.

Wolfram Mathematica
We have 30 concurrent use licenses. It can be installed on any on-campus computer. Faculty can also use the software at home, but must fill out a webform at http://www.wolfram.com/siteinfo/homeuse/ and provide our license number in order to download the software. Please contact the Helpdesk for the license number.

Microsoft Visual Studio
Available for college-owned and personal computers.

ACL Auditing Software
Available for college-owned computers.

PeachTree Educational 2009
Available for college-owned computers.
Sibelius
We have 30 concurrent use licenses. It can be used on any on-campus computer.

Software for MacOS

OS X 10.7 Lion
This is available to everyone with a school-owned Intel Mac. Your computer will need to be re-imaged in order to upgrade you to Lion. Please contact the Helpdesk for details if you are interested or have questions. All Lion systems will have iLife ‘11, iWork ‘09, Microsoft Office 2011, Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 Design Premium, Sibelius, Mathematica, and SPSS pre-installed. There is no need to separately request those if you request Lion.

Please be aware that if you currently use Parallels or VMWare Fusion, there may be special considerations for the upgrade, so please let us know if that is the case.

iLife '11
Available to everyone with a school-owned Mac running Snow Leopard or later. If you would like iLife '11 but have Tiger or Leopard, you will need to be upgraded to Lion.

iWork '09
Available to everyone with a school-owned Mac.

Aperture 3
We have limited copies available for school-owned computers running Leopard or later. If you would like Aperture but have Tiger, you will need to be upgraded to Lion.

Final Cut Studio 3/Final Cut Pro X
We have limited copies of this available for school-owned Macs.

Microsoft Office 2011
Includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Communicator.

Available for college-owned and personal Macs running Leopard or later. If you would like it for your office computer, please contact the Help Desk. If you would like it for your personally owned computer, please visit the Help Desk in Accinno room 115.

Microsoft Office 2008
Includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Entourage, and Communicator.

Available for college-owned and personal Macs running Tiger. If you would like it for your office computer, please contact the Help Desk. If you would like it for your personally owned computer, please visit the Help Desk in Accinno room 115.

Note: if you use Office 2008, you need to download Entourage EWS to check your campus E-mail.

VMWare Fusion 3.0
We have limited copies available for school-owned Intel Macs.

Parallels 4
We have limited copies available for school-owned Intel Macs.

Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 Design Premium
Includes Photoshop Extended, Illustrator, InDesign, Dreamweaver, Flash Professional, Flash Catalyst, Fireworks, Acrobat X Pro, Bridge, and Device Central.

Available for college-owned and personal Macs. If you would like it for your office computer, please contact the Help Desk. If you would like it for your personally owned computer, please visit the Help Desk in Accinno room 115.

Sibelius 6
We have 30 concurrent-use licenses. It can be installed on any college-owned computer. If it is installed on a laptop, it will only work on campus.

Wolfram Mathematica
We have 30 concurrent-use licenses. It can be installed on any college-owned computer.
