Once again, two PC HPM majors were awarded competitive, paid summer internships by the Health Career Connection in 2002. Kerri Ulmer '03 completed her internship at Faulkner Hospital, while Angela Maina '03 worked at Brigham and Womens' Hospital. PC HPM students took two of the HCC's twelve internship positions available in the Northeast.
Dr. Williams' HPM 420 (Decision Making) course hosted two practing health care executives for a stimulating discussion of current issues in strategic management in the health care industry. On April 11, 2002 Hugh Kelleher, Vice President for Operations, Anna Jacques Hospital, Newburyport, MA, spoke to the class, while on April 25th Kevin Burchill, the CEO of Martha's Vineyard Hospital and an alumnus of PC's HPM program, joined the class for a presentation.
On April 4, 2002 the HPM program welcomed five graduates from the classes of 2000 and 2001 back to Providence College. Joan Bohlke ('01), Andrea Eastwood ('00), Stacie Lallier ('00), Andy Lough ('00), and Erin Newman ('01) shared experiences in searching for jobs, discussed their current positions, offered networking advice for current students, and explored various career options.
Jay Higgins '03 began to organize a student chapter of the American College of Healthcare executives at Providence College. The ACHE is a leading professional organization in the field and offers outstanding career development opportunities for students.
On February 21, 2002 the HPM program hosted a lecture by Ronald Winter, the former executive director of the Providence Community Health Centers, Inc. Mr. Winter discussed the evolution of RIte Care and its impact on community health centers in RI with an audience of 20-25 students and faculty.
On January 29, 2002 the HPM program welcomed a representative from the Health Career Connection to Providence College. Ms. Morita explained the internship opportunities available for HPM majors thorugh the HCC to a packed room of 20 students. During the summer of 2002, two HPM majors at PC (Angela Black '02 and Melissa Melone '02) joined students from Wellsley, MIT, and Harvard as HCC interns in the Boston area.
In November, 2001 Dr. Hackey presented the results of his recent research on state certificate of need programs to a day-long legislative retreat in Baltimore, Maryland sponsored by the Maryland Health Care Commission. Dr. Hackey's co-presenters included Daniel Fox, President of the Milbank Memorial Fund, and Dr. David Salkever of Johns Hopkins University's School of Public Health. Dr. Hackey's research, a national survey of state CON stakeholders, was, co-authored with three HPM students (Catherine Cairns '01, Kyle Snyder '01, and Liz Williams '01).
In October 2001, the HPM program welcomed five graduates from the class of 2001 back to Providence College. Tricia Brennan, Catherine Cairns, Jill Flanagan, Rosemary Fuggetta, and Breanne Wojnarowicz discussed how they found their current positions, offered networking advice for current students, and explored various career options. More than 40 HPM students attended the event.
