Intership/Community/Engagement

The department encourages advanced-level students to deepen their knowledge of language and culture through an internship placement. Opportunities may include foreign consular offices, immigration and other federal and state agencies, international banking, the import-export industry, and education. French majors with an interest in education, for example, gain firsthand classroom expereince as teacher assistants with French American School in Providence, while Italian majors interested in careers in politics or international affairs can intern at the local Italian Consular Office.

Service learning also can build students' language proficiency and cultural understanding. The foreign language studies department encourages Spanish majors, for example, to participate in the Citizenship Tutoring Program of the Diocese of Providence-serving Hispanics interested in becoming U.S. citizens-and to volunteer for the Conversational Partners program at English for Action, which links ESL, adult education, and community leadership programs.
