Mission Statement

The Department of Foreign Language Studies enhances the mission of the College by offering to all Providence College students the opportunity to study foreign languages and cultures as an integral part of their liberal arts education. The Department is committed to advancing foreign language and cross-cultural competencies by connecting students with cultural constructs different from their own and engaging them in humanistic inquiry. Foreign Language Studies faculty integrate excellent and innovative instruction in language with a curriculum that incorporates linguistics, literature, culture, and area studies, offering students opportunities to use the target language in native and near-native settings and with each other. Knowledge of foreign languages is essential for full and active participation in the global community, an asset in every field of endeavor, and a requirement for graduate study in many disciplines.
