TITLE: Changes in the Faculty Handbook to Allow the Creation of a School
RESOLVED:
That the Faculty Handbook be changed to modify the governance structure to include the creation of (a) school(s) as follows:

Rationale:
In September 2006, College President Brian Shanley, O.P., announced the creation of a School of Business which would be headed by an academic dean. The College currently has a governance structure that includes departments and programs but not schools. Additionally, the College has an Undergraduate Dean, but has no faculty or administrative dean position in the Undergraduate school.
In October 2006, Senate President Lenon charged the Ad-hoc Joint Committee on Governance and Academic Organization (CGAO), to investigate and recommend changes to the Faculty Handbook to reflect the change in the academic organization and governance the creation of a school requires and to specify the administrative responsibilities and authority of an academic dean.
The CGAO recommends that the academic dean will be a faculty position with administrative responsibilities, as is currently the case with department chairs and program directors. This recommendation was made for two primary reasons:
- so that the academic dean would be accountable to the faculty of the College;
- so that the changes to the Handbook are relatively minor.
