Community Service

What Does Service Mean at Providence College?

Tijuana6copy.jpgProvidence College believes that acts of community service by its students, faculty, and staff should be performed intentionally to meet individual and collective needs identified and articulated by those we serve. As an investment in our shared community, our service is most perfectly realized when it creates productive partnerships, builds positive relationships, and is mutually beneficial to those serving and being served.

Providence College embraces and supports these acts of service as tangible expressions of our mission-stated commitment to recognize "the unity of the human family that proceeds from its one Creator" and to encourage "the deepest respect for the essential dignity, freedom, and equality of every person." (PC Mission Statement)

Living the Catholic and Dominican Mission

"Providence College prepares its students to be responsible and productive citizens to serve in their own society and the greater world community." -excerpt from the College's Mission Statement

Community service and social justice advocacy are central to the Providence College mission and is a shared experience of many PC students.  Providence College students engage in a vast array of voluntary community service each year, through a number of different academic departments and co-curricular programs.

Students are offered the invitation to serve:

  • marginalized groups such as youth, the elderly, non-native English speakers, the ill, people living with disabilities, those struggling to meet their basic needs of food and shelter, and other service, including caring for our earth.
  • at one-time days of service, on a consistent, weekly basis, or over Fall Break, January Break, or Spring Break through direct service, advocacy, community organizing, or community-based research
  • through direct service, advocacy, community organizing, or community-based research
  • on campus, in the greater Providence community, up and down the East Coast, on a Native American reservation, and in Mexico.

During the academic year, typically over 2,000 PC students are actively involved in volunteering beyond 45,000 hours of service. Join this growing community of passionate and engaged students by searching the links at the left for more information about the service opportunities available through various campus departments.

Tell Us About Your Service

Every semester, we collect information from students, staff, faculty, and administration about the service in which they participate. This information is crucial to understanding PC's culture of service, reporting to internal and external constiutuents, and improving opportunities for the future.

Last year, students served more than 60,000 hours in the community. Faculty and staff reported serving more than 8,300 hours.
