National Science Foundation's Research Experience for Undergraduates–The NSF sponsors summer programs for students completing their sophomore and junior years in the following areas: biological sciences, computer and information science and engineering, education, earth sciences, ocean sciences, polar programs, mathematical and physical sciences, chemistry, materials science, mathematics and physics.  These programs are very competitive, so apply to a large number of institutions to ensure getting an offer.

• San Jose State University has an academic/industrial program involving IBM Almaden Research Center in the areas of surface chemistry and analytical chemistry of materials.
• Cornell University's Center for Materials Research has a summer program for students to work on interdisciplinary and collaborative research projects in chemistry, physics and engineering disciplines.
• Virginia Tech has a SURP program.
• Syracuse University has opportunities in biochemistry, physical, organic, inorganic, surface, materials and organometallic chemistry.
• Georgia Tech has opportunities in analytical, biological, inorganic, organic and physical chemistry. They offer a stipend, travel allowance, housing and health insurance.
• University of California, Santa Cruz, has internships in chemistry and biochemistry.
• The University of Southern California has an REU program in the Chemistry Department. Housing, meals, medical coverage, and travel costs are covered, plus there is a $3000 stipend.  Application deadline is early March.

• Lawrence Livermore Labs has summer internships in applied science and has a very early deadline (November), but may consider applications that arrive past this deadline.
• Six colleges and universities have formed an REU consortium which involves six chemists at six undergraduate institutions, all doing research in the same field (synthesis of theoretically interesting molecules). Participants will be part of both a local team and a broader group involving all six faculty and their students.  The larger group will meet three times during the summer, including one at the Reaction Mechanisms Conference in Columbus, Ohio.  At these meetings students and faculty  will discuss their projects with input from one of the experts in the field.
• The Howard Hughes Medical Institute is sponsoring a summer undergraduate research program at Villanova University.  Opportunities are available in biology and chemistry.
• The Syncure Cancer Research Corporation is sponsoring an undergraduate research program in synthetic and bioorganic chemistry at Florida State University.  The twelve-week program pays a stipend of $4500, plus housing. The deadline is March 1 and decisions will be made by March 22. For an application, send an e-mail to Professor Marie E. Krafft.

• Beaver Creek Field Research Station (Fall Creek, WI) has summer internships in environmental science.
• Furman University is sponsoring a "River Basin Research Initiative" for students interested in earth and environmental sciences. The project involves studying the causes of poor water quality in the Enoree River Basin.

• The American Association for the Advancement of Science has a Mass Media Science and Engineering Fellows Program which allows science students to work as reporters, researchers and production assistants with science journalists as their mentors.  The purpose of the program is to increase public understanding of science and technology issues.  Application deadline is Jan. 1, and applicants will be notified by April 1.  Applicants should be willing to accept assignments anywhere in the United States for a ten week period during the summer.

• Argonne National Laboratories has a summer program with research projects available in physical and life sciences, math, computer science and engineering.  They also have applied programs in coal, conservation, environmental impact and technology, and fission and fusion technology.
• Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Akron, OH, has internships in physical chemistry, polymers, and engineering.

• The ACS publishes a directory called "Directory of Experience Opportunities" which is free to ACS affiliates and $10 for everyone else. The ACSSA advisor will have a copy of the current Directory.
