Internet Resources: Chemistry
Much of the information presented here was gathered from
an article entitled "Career Planning Resources" by D. Slade,
published in the November 2, 1998 issue of Chemical and
Engineering News, pp. 57-59. The article is available
in Phillips Library.
American Chemical
Society's Chem Center has links to open positions at
ACS headquarters and links to ACS
Career Services.
Science's "Next Wave" is a weekly online publication that covers
scientific training, career development, and the science
job market. Access to job listings is free, but articles
are accessible with a subscription only. ACS members
have free
access to "Next Wave". An individual one-year
subscription costs $19.95.
The National Association
of Colleges & Employers (NACE) maintains a site
which includes Job Choices Online, which is an electronic
magazine and a job database. NACE also has several
print publications available for job seekers that can be
purchased through this site.
The National
Academy of Sciences has career links to employment,
internships, fellowships and post-docs, and career guides.
Medzilla allows
job seekers to post as well as update their resumes for
employers to review. It also features searchable job
listing and a list of Internet links.
JobSpectrum.org
is a eb site which is a joint effort between ACS Publications
and Membership Divisions and is designed to complement the
current ACS suite of career services and Chemical and
Engineering News classified ads.
The Academic Employment Network web page lists openings for colleges and primary and secondary schools, all levels, adminstrative through faculty.
Chemsoc, hosted by the UK's Royal Society of Chemistry, posts chemistry-related jobs in the UK and other links to international employment resources.
Science.org offers visitors access to Science's classified ads.
The Scientific Career Transitions Program offers career counseling to scientists, but it is not cheap!
Internet Resources: Biochemistry and Biological
Sciences
Bio Online: Life on the Net
contains links to a great deal of information to biologists,
including companies, tips on job searching, employment opportunities
and a job search firm.
Cosponsored by SciWeb
and the Biotechnology Industry Organization, this site
has a large database of job postings.
The BioFind site
contains discussion groups, job postings and resume postings
BioSpace--the Hub Site for Biotechnology is a leading provider of web-based resources for the life sciences industry.
BioSpace–the Hub Site
for Biotechnology allows keyword searches and searches
by company.
Bioview is
the best biotechnology career, job, and employment site
on the internet (according to them). BioView contains job
postings from hundreds of top biotechnology companies as
well as useful career resources.
Cato Research provides directories of biotech firms and links to other sources of information.
MedMarket puts medical manufacturing businesses in touch with each other, and also posts job openings.
MedSearch lists jobs in the health care industry.
World Wide Web Virtual
Library: Biotechnology This directory contains over
1000 URLs of companies, research institutes, universities,
sources of information and other directories specific
to biotechnology, pharmaceutical development and related
fields. It places emphasis on product development and the
delivery of products and services.
BioMedNet provides
a listing of employment opportunities, as well as information
and products of interest to biological sciences.
Sciencejobs.com
is a web-based career service. They post jobs in industry,
academia, and government. You can register for Jobs Email
Alert and receive free emails listing job vacancies. You
can also post your resume and let employers find you. Click
on the Sciencejobs.com link to sign up.
Teaching Opportunities
The Knowles Science Teaching Foundation (KSTF) awards Science Teaching Fellowships to BS degree recipients who want to become licensed to teach high school physics, earth science, or chemistry. The fellowship provides financial support for five years in the form of tuition assistance and stipends. Deadline is 16 January 2007.

"What Color is Your Parachute? A Practical Manual for Job-Hunters
and Career-Changers" by Richard Nelson Bolles. A new
edition of the book comes out every year, and is available
in bookstores. In addition, the book also has its

"Alternative Careers in Science: Leaving the Ivory Tower"
edited by Cynthia Robbins-Roth. Twenty-three scientists
who work in "alternative careers" contributed chapters.
This book is available in bookstores.
"Job Opportunities in Health & Science" is published by Peterson's.
"Career Renewal: Tools for Scientists and Technical Professionals" by Stephen Rosen and Celia Paul, published by Academic Press offers good advice for all job seekers.

The American Chemical Society publishes several books and
pamphlets, some for a fee, and some for free. A list
is available at Career Services. Many of the brochures are

Active in Product Development for Business" published by
R. R. Bowker. This is an annually updated directory of commercial

lists research-focused nonprofit organizations. This
reference costs $520, so get it from the library. For more

"Occupational Outlook
Handbook" published by the US Department of Labor describes
what workers actually do on the job, and is available in
print form but is also published free on the Internet.

A temporary job can lead to permanent employment.
