Workshop: Creativity isn't about what you make, it's about HOW you think.
Presented by Jason Yoon, Executive Director, New Urban Arts
New Urban Arts is a nationally recognized community based arts organization for high-school students and emerging artists in Providence Rhode Island whose mission is to build a vital community that empowers young people as artists and leaders to develop a lifelong creative practice.
In pursuit of its mission, NUA has a clearly-defined set of organizational values that guide decision-making and artistic and aesthetic practice. Eschewing proscriptive, top-down approaches to building its organizational culture, New Urban Arts has instead let values guide its work, working to build a "vital community" versus promoting what the educator Alfie Kohn calls a culture of "compliance." A group of New Urban Arts alumni and artist mentors will lead participants through hands-on creative exercises that serve to reinforce its core values which include: voice, inclusion, risk, connection and leadership. The activities will be followed by an NUA-facilitated conversation about New Urban Arts' core values and the applications of a creative thinking outside the arts. The workshop will also include a presentation and discussion of a NUA recent publication, Sitting in the Questions, a book documenting a leadership Institute that NUA led for artists committed to doing community engaged work.
