This course is an in-depth continuation of the principles and techniques mastered in ART 121 and expands upon the problems of mass and volume in space. The student, in discussion with the instructor, will decide upon what materials will be used by the student in the creation and completion of at least five (5) serious sculptural projects. The exact number of works is dependent upon the material chosen and the difficulty of the projects.
Prerequisite: ART 121.
ART 223 – Sculpture III: Life Sculpture
1 semester, 3 credits *
This is an introduction to the study of the human figure. Initial studies will be done in clay which will be then executed according to the choice of the student in wood, stone, plaster, or metal. It is an investigation of the human form only and all work is done directly from the model in order to study the human form in its various spatial positions such as standing, sitting, or reclining. In addition, the student will do studies of the head, hands, and feet. These studies are to be actual renderings of the model. Once the student has mastered the representational rendition of the human form, a more abstract and interpretive one can be done.
Prerequisite: ART 121.
ART 324 – Sculpture IV
1 semester, 3 credits *
This course is for the serious sculpture student who has mastered the principles and techniques of sculpture and has a command of the materials and tools that will be used by the student. The student will meet with the instructor to discuss the projects that will be investigated. Once the proposed projects are chosen, the student will then meet with the instructor during the course of the semester for criticisms and evaluations. The number of works that will be produced will be dependent upon the materials and the particular project. Sculptures in this course look toward a senior thesis show. Therefore, the student should reflect a skillful command of the materials and tools used as well as a mature and capable attitude toward the works produced and witness to a unique perspective and perception that is creative and interesting visually.
