As the new academic year unfolds, the 985 members
of the Class of 2012 bring an average 3.47 GPA with them, and the College
is welcoming 35 new, full-time faculty members. Twenty-six of the faculty

giving society renamed
College
celebrates $80-million “Dunk” project
PC administrators, student-athletes, and staff participated
in a two-day celebration of the newly renovated Dunkin’ Donuts
Center, the home of Friars’ men’s basketball. A dedication
ceremony and an open house acknowledged the $80-million renovation, which
features 20 luxury suites, new seating throughout the arena, a new video
scoreboard, new food court towers, and other enhancements. [more]Square
to be named for late Rev. John F. Cunningham, O.P. '50
The
College community will join City of Providence government leaders in
dedicating
the intersection at the main entrance of campus in memory of Rev. John
F. Cunningham, O.P. ’50. “Cunningham
Square,” named for the priest who led PC as its 10th president
from 1985-94, will be dedicated on Wednesday, September 24, at 3:30 p.m.

Class of
2006 members realized a dream this summer with the construction of a
brick walkway from Phillips Memorial Library to the courtyard of St.
Dominic Chapel. The walkway, which has been named “Alumni Lane,” was
one of more than a dozen infrastructure improvement projects undertaken

If
you are a graduate or friend of the College who is a federal employee,
the Office of Institutional Advancement encourages you to give to PC
through the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) for 2008. The College recently
joined the Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts CFC for 2008. [more]Department
eyes integrating additional Jewish theology
Dr.
Arthur P. Urbano, Jr., assistant professor of theology, and the Department
of Theology are exploring integrating more Jewish theology into the department’s
curriculum. An ad-hoc committee has been formed, and Urbano requests
that alumni with ideas and thoughts contact him. [more]
Professor
seeks alumni help in leadership seminar
Dr.
Matthew Eriksen, associate professor of management, is looking for alumni
who
would be willing to be interviewed about leadership by students in his
Leadership Development seminar. As part of their “Personal Leadership
Conundrum” assignment, students must interview at least two leaders
who have experienced or can offer insight into their dilemmas. Based
on his past experience, Eriksen has found the interviews to be a great
learning experience for alumni and students. Interested alumni can contact

Friars’ men’s
hoop schedule includes 17 home games
The Friars’ men’s
basketball team will tip off the 2008-09 season with a home game on Saturday,
November 15, against Northeastern. The Friars’ 30-game schedule
features 18 BIG EAST Conference games and 17 home contests, including
matchups with intrastate rivals Rhode Island, Brown, and Bryant. [more]Soccer

The nationally ranked men’s soccer
team (3-1-3) and the women’s
soccer team (5-2-0) lead
a solid early
showing by PC fall athletics teams. The field hockey team boasts a 5-3-0
record and both the women’s and men’s cross country teams

PC—rank fourth nationally among states’ college students
in volunteering in the community. Last academic year, more than 3,500
PC students devoted nearly 44,000 hours of community service to a wide
array of schools, churches, agencies, and more in Greater Providence. • Former PC cross country and track standout Charlie Breagy ’84 was the race director and one of the founders of the nationally prominent CVS Caremark Downtown 5K road race, which was run in Providence on Sunday, September 21.
