New VPIA excited by PC opportunity
Academic reputation, commitment to mission, and leadership lured him to PC, said the College's new vice president for institutional advancement. David C. Wegrzyn, a Rhode Island native, emphasized he sees himself as "a connector and a builder." [more]
PC's graduation rate #1 in U.S. News guide
The College's 85 percent graduation rate ranks highest among its peer institutions nationally in the 2007 edition of U.S. News' college guide, America's Best Colleges. The guide also recognizes PC as a "best value" school and for its service-learning programs.

SAT/ACT scores dropped as a requirement
Determined to close the "student accessibility gap," the College will no longer require undergraduate applicants to provide SAT or ACT scores when applying for admission. The decision reinforces PC's reputation as a school founded to increase opportunities for first-generation immigrants, said President Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P. '80.

Father Izzo "overwhelmed" by re-election
It's four more years as prior provincial of the Dominican Province of St. Joseph for the Very Rev. D. Dominic Izzo, O.P. '88. Father Izzo said he was "overwhelmed" by his re-election at the provincial chapter meeting held at PC. [more]
Annual Fund: Help support the foundation
The campaign to increase participation and contributions to the Annual Fund--the financial foundation of the College--is under way for fiscal year 2007. The Office of Institutional Advancement once again is spearheading efforts to assist President Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P. '80 in realizing his vision for PC. [more]
Multicultural reunion to feature tribute
The work of Rev. Robert A. Morris, O.P. '44, a founder of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Fund, will be honored during Multicultural Reunion Weekend on September 29 to October 1. Other weekend events will include a presentation by a comedian, a barbecue, music, and a reunion Mass. [more]
Whitcome scholarship bequest grows to $7.64M
A $5.2 million bequest that is the largest single donation for scholarships in College history has grown to $7,640,000. The bequest was a gift from Philip J. Whitcome, Ph.D. '70 of Madison, Conn., who died last December. [more]
Reunion Weekend 2007 dates announced
Alumni with classes ending in '2 or '7 are invited back to PC for Reunion Weekend 2007, which will take place from June 1-3. The weekend will kick off on Friday with a Mass for Golden Friars from the classes of `57, `52, `47, `42, and `37. There will be an All-Classes Barbecue on the Slavin Center Lawn on Saturday. Sunday will feature a piano brunch. Many more details of the weekend will be set in the months ahead. Field hockey team surprises #8 Michigan
PC's field hockey team pulled the stunner of the early fall athletics season by nipping nationally 8th-ranked Michigan, 2-1, on September 3. The win kept the Friars undefeated (3-0-0) after their first three games. Elsewhere, the women's soccer team was 1-0-2, the men's soccer team was 2-1-0, and the volleyball team had a 2-1 record. The men's and women's cross country teams each defeated the University of New Hampshire in their season openers as well. For the latest in Friar athletics, go to www.friars.com.

• The College welcomed 24 new, full-time faculty members, representing 16 disciplines, for the start of the 2006-2007 academic year.
• The departments of philosophy and theology relocated from elsewhere on campus to the newly renovated St. Catherine of Siena Hall on the East Campus effective with the start of this academic year.
