Concannon Fitness Center dedicated, blessed
The
23,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art Concannon Fitness Center was dedicated
and blessed on October 4 before an audience of 175 members and friends
of the College community. The construction of the $12 million facility
caps a decade-long capital improvements drive that has reached $110 million. [more]Class of 2011 more diverse, academically superior
As
the first barometer of PC's four-year pilot program that gives admission
applicants the option of submitting SAT and ACT examination scores,
the Class of 2011 is a more diverse and academically talented group.
Christopher P. Lydon, associate vice president for admission and enrollment
planning, reports that this year's class has 48 more undergraduates from minority
groups than its predecessor. Its overall grade-point average of 3.47 is .01 higher than the Class of 2010. [more]Legacy
students carry on the Friar tradition
The
Class of 2011 includes 145 members who are legacy students—those
who have either a parent or a sibling who has graduated from or attends
PC. That tradition is important to the College because it signifies
the strength of the relationship that PC already has with a family. [more]
College gears up for NEASC reaccreditation visit

team of eight higher-education administrators and faculty members will
evaluate the College from October 14-17 as the final phase of the review
process conducted by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges,
Inc. (NEASC). The College's reaccreditation efforts have been led by Dr. Sheila M. Adamus and Dr.
Brian J. Bartolini, co-chairs of the Self-Study Steering Committee.

Liberal Arts Honors celebrates 50th anniversary
The
Liberal Arts Honors Program plans five events in observance of the
50th anniversary of its founding in 1957. In addition to its annual
Convocation, which will take place on October 20, the program is sponsoring
four other events, including a trip to France. Dr. Stephen
J. Lynch, program director, said a special effort is being made to
invite all Honors Program alumni to the anniversary events.

Alumni exhibit reflects Elkington's influence
The
works of 21 alumni will be featured beginning this month in a campus
photography exhibit honoring PC faculty member Richard N. Elkington. The
exhibit, 35 Years of Vision: The Students of Richard N. Elkington, recognizes the
pending retirement and legacy of Elkington as a professor and mentor. [more]
WIN seeks volunteer help on food bank nights
The
Women's Involvement Network (WIN) of the Providence College National
Alumni Association is seeking volunteers to help sort donated food at two food
bank nights this month. A total of 85 volunteers are needed at food banks in
Hatfield, Mass., and Providence, R.I. [more]Support
your Friars at Sports Nights
In
conjunction with the Department of Athletics and several alumni, the Office
of Institutional Advancement is sponsoring two upcoming Sports Night Fundraisers
to benefit the Friars Forever Athletic Fund. Fundraisers are scheduled
in Boston on October 9 and in New York City on October 16. Join Athletic
Director Robert G. Driscoll, Jr. and Friar head coaches such as Tim Welsh,
Phil Seymore, Tim Army '85, and Bob Deraney as they begin another exciting

The
countdown to "Late Night Madness" continues for Friar men's
and women&'s basketball fans, with the official start of the season
on Friday night, October 12, in Mullaney Gym in Alumni Hall. For the

• Avid
stamp collector Rev. James A. Driscoll, O.P., retired assistant professor
of theology, has put together a stamp collection on four prominent
Dominican saints (Saints Dominic de Guzman, Albert the Great, Thomas
Aquinas, and
Catherine of Siena) that is on exhibit in the Center for Catholic
and Dominican Studies through November 15.
• The Providence College Bookstore recently celebrated the completion of renovations that include a newly located entrance with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by College President Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P. '80.
