New School of Business to be led by a dean
The College will establish a School of Business that will be led by a dean, effective July 1, 2007. The organizational change from the current Division of Business Administration, which is spearheaded by a director, was approved recently by the PC Corporation and has important strategic ramifications. Ferreira named assistant VP in institutional advancement
Robert Ferreira '83 has been appointed assistant vice president for alumni relations in the Office of the Vice President for Institutional Advancement. Previously the executive director of alumni relations, Ferreira has served his alma mater for 14 years. His promotion was announced by David C. Wegrzyn, vice president for institutional advancement. Classrooms, lab renovated with alumni help
In a continuing effort by reunion classes, eight more classrooms and one laboratory were recently renovated at the College. The renovations include installing state-of-the-art technology and new windows, carpeting, and lighting. Approximately $914,000 in gifts and pledges has been raised over the past two years to bolster the Classroom Renovation Project. [more]

Michael T. Leary Memorial Scholarship a labor of love
The Michael T. Leary Memorial Scholarship Fund was born out of the deep love and affection that family and friends had for Michael, a member of the Class of 1999, who died in May 2005. Together, they worked like a team to raise the funds needed to establish the endowed scholarship, which will benefit computer science majors from the Connecticut area. [more]

PC teams excel in BIG EAST action
The Friars' field hockey and men's soccer teams have advanced to the semifinals of the BIG EAST Tournament in their sport. Each will be competing on the weekend of November 3-5. Meanwhile, for the third time in school history, PC's men's and women's cross country teams swept the BIG EAST Conference Championship on October 27. [more]

Honorary degree candidate nominations sought
Nominations for honorary degree candidates for the 2007 Commencement Exercises are being accepted by the Honorary Degree Committee. Commencement will take place on Sunday, May 20. Nominations for candidates will be accepted through December 15, 2006. [more]

Faculty teaching award nominations welcomed
The Teaching Award Selection Committee invites alumni and other members of the College community to submit nominations for the 2006-07 Joseph R. Accinno Faculty Teaching Award. The award recognizes a current tenured faculty member who demonstrates excellence in teaching, conveys a passion and enthusiasm for learning, and shows concern for students' academic and personal growth. IRA law clears way for tax-free gifts to PC
A new federal law allows people age 70 1/2 and older to make tax-free charitable contributions from an IRA of up to $100,000 to a variety of organizations, including Providence College. This attractive opportunity for giving only applies to 2006 and 2007. [more]

Did you know?
• Jazzmans Café, a coffee shop operated by Sodexho Campus Dining, opened last month in Davis Hall on the East Campus. The café serves a variety of brewed coffees, other hot and cold beverages, baked goods, soups, salads, and sandwiches.
• The 2006-07 PC men's basketball team was ranked 10th among 16 teams in the BIG EAST Conference's Preseason Coaches' Poll.
