Jerseys of three Friar basketball legends retired
A capacity crowd packed a Providence hotel ballroom for a banquet on March 7 during which the jerseys of Friar basketball greats Ernie DiGregorio ’73, Marvin Barnes ’74, and the late Jimmy Walker ’67 were retired. Proceeds from the banquet, which was entitled “3 of a Kind, Friar Legends Forever,” capped a $500,000 fund-raising campaign for the naming of the varsity weight room in the new Concannon Fitness Center in Walker’s memory. PC’s community service reputation spotlighted
Providence College and its Feinstein Institute for Public Service were singled out among Rhode Island colleges and universities for commitment to community service during an education conference on March 7 in Providence. Dr. Raymond L. Sickinger, PC professor and director of the Feinstein Institute, highlighted the College’s partnership with the Providence After School Alliance (PASA) to approximately 150 higher-education and community leaders. College Bowl team headed for nationals
Providence College captured the Region I College Bowl Championship and will compete in the national College Bowl tournament for the second consecutive year on April 25-27 in St. Paul, Minn. Representing PC in the fast-paced, question-and-answer competition will be Edward W. Stravato ’08 of Johnston, R.I.; Sean Olvany ’09 of Wilmette, Ill.; Joseph Ritinski ’09 of North Wales, Pa; and Jeremiah A. Begley ’10 of St. Albans, Vt. [more]

MarcAureles named honorary chairs of Cabernet Cabaret
Meredith L. ’90 and Joseph J. MarcAurele will serve as honorary chairs of the third annual Cabernet Cabaret on June 13 in the new Concannon Fitness Center. The wine tasting and silent auction event will feature more than 50 wines from Italy and Argentina, with proceeds from the evening benefiting the National Alumni Association Scholarship Fund. [more]

Rodney Delasanta Honors Lecture scheduled
The Liberal Arts Honors Program, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this academic year, will present the second annual Rodney Delasanta Honors Lecture on April 9 at 4:00 p.m. in the Feinstein Academic Center, Room 400. The lecture is named for Dr. Rodney K. Delasanta, professor of English and a longtime Honors Program director, who died last year. This year’s speaker is Msgr. Robert Sokolowski, the Elizabeth Breckenridge Caldwell Professor of Philosophy at The Catholic University of America. He will speak on the topic of “Truth and the Human Person.” The lecture is open to all.

Mal Brown Club to honor five members of PC community
Two alumni, David J. Syner, C.P.A. ’71 and Mark Gasbarro ’97, will be among five distinguished individuals honored on March 27 by the Greater Providence Chapter of the Providence College National Alumni Association, the Mal Brown Club. The club’s annual Alumni Awards Reception in the Smith Center for the Arts will benefit the Mal Brown Club Scholarship Fund. [more]

Excitement builds for psychology’s 40th-anniversary party
All graduates of the Department of Psychology are invited to a 40th-anniversary celebration of the department’s first graduating class during a daylong reunion on campus on May 3. The celebration will feature campus tours, academic seminars, a department retrospective, and a dinner reception for three retiring longtime faculty members, including current department chair Dr. Theodore N. Bosack (right). [more]

Hundreds enjoy Homecoming lineup, spirit
More than 500 alumni, family members, and friends took part in Homecoming Weekend 2008 activities on and off campus on February 15-17. Highlights included a PC Athletics Hall of Fame induction, a reunion of former club football program players, a brunch with College President Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P. ’80, young alumni social gatherings, and a sold-out concert. [more]

Relay for Life reaches out to alumni survivors
Student organizers of the fifth annual Relay for Life at Providence College are looking for alumni survivors of cancer who would like to participate and share their experiences. This year’s overnight relay is scheduled for April 4-5 in the Peterson Recreation Center. Teams and individuals will walk or run laps to raise money and awareness for the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) fight against cancer. A dinner and ceremony have been planned to honor survivors. Five Friar teams extend their seasons
Five PC winter athletics teams qualified for post-season competition: the men’s basketball team, the men’s and women’s ice hockey teams, and the men’s and women’s track teams. For the latest in Friar athletics, go to www.friars.com.

• The College awarded more than $2.3 million in endowed scholarship funds to more than 530 students this academic year.
• The Global Studies Program will celebrate its first four-year class of graduates this May. Seventeen students are scheduled to earn their bachelor of arts degree in the major.
