Concannon donates $2M leadership gift for fitness center
William F. Concannon '77, a member of PC’s Board of Trustees,
recently donated a $2 million leadership gift for the College's new fitness center,
currently under construction. The donation represents the largest gift in College history
supporting a fitness/athletics initiative. It is also the largest donation received to date for the fitness center.

Campus alcohol abuse problem documented in report
The
release of a report on alcohol abuse on campus represents "the first
step to real change," according to College President Rev. Brian
J. Shanley, O.P. '80. Prepared by the Committee on Campus Culture,
Conduct, and Civility, the report documents the results of a Spring
2006 survey administered to students in the classes of 2008 and 2009.
A change
in the campus culture must be "a collective effort," Father
Shanley said in an e-mail message to the College community on February

Slatterys establish scholarship fund
William
D. Slattery, Jr. '53 and his wife Barbara have established an endowed
scholarship fund at the College to provide assistance to
students with financial need. Slattery has been a major benefactor
of the College for over five decades and is the first alumnus to serve
as chair of every level of the Annual Fund.

Alumni chapters to recognize eight individuals
Eight
outstanding individuals with ties to the College will be honored by
two chapters of the Providence College Alumni Association. The Providence-based
Mal Brown Club's Awards Night will be held on April 19, while the New Haven Club’s
48th annual Veritas Awards Dinner will take place on May 3. Both programs
will benefit PC students with financial need.

Three students chosen for Teach for America program
Three
students from the Class of 2007 have been selected to participate in
a national corps of educators that reaches out to low-income public
schools across the country. Under the Teach for America program, David Jose, Julie Mark
(at right), and Natalie Scheidt will teach for two years each in schools in
Louisiana and Arizona. [more]Annual honors lecture named for Dr. Delasanta
The
College has named the annual lecture of the Liberal Arts Honors Program
in honor of Dr. Rodney K. Delasanta '53, professor of English, who
directed the program for 17 years. The announcement of the Rodney Delasanta
Honors Lecture was made by College President Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P. prior
to the lecture in February. [more]

This
year's reunion classes (all those ending in '2 and '7)
are being invited to celebrate their upcoming reunion (June 1-3, 2007)
by supporting the 2007 Annual Fund. Reunion committee members are reaching

Ex-Friar Screen relives 1987 NCAA Final Four glory
Carlton
Screen '90, a freshman guard on PC's 1987 NCAA Final Four team,
has gone on to a successful career as a teacher, a college and high
school basketball coach, and more. Screen, who attributes much of his
success to former Friar Head Coach Rick Pitino, will attend the team's May 12
gala, which will benefit the Friar Athletic Fund.

Friar teams gear up for postseason action
The
women's ice hockey team and the men's basketball team have qualified
for the HOCKEY EAST and the BIG EAST Conference postseason tournaments,
respectively. The men's hockey team remains in contention for a spot
in the HOCKEY EAST Tournament. Meanwhile, several members of the men's
and women's indoor track teams have qualified for the NCAA Championship. For the

Alumni online form notes lost for brief period
Alumni
who submitted class and other personal notes - such as marriages and
new arrivals - via forms on the College's Web site between the
period of January 5 and February 12, 2007, are kindly asked to resubmit
them. The forms were inadvertently lost while the College was converting
its e-mail accounts to a new server. We are sorry for the inconvenience. Thank
you for your understanding!
Did you know?
• The
administration recently approved women’s studies as a major, making
it the 49th major offered to PC undergraduates.
• Former Friar standout Joe Hassett, Jr. '77, who is the radio color analyst for PC men's basketball, has been chosen as the grand marshal of the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Providence on March 10.
