Actor John O'Hurley '76 named commencement speaker
Actor and entrepreneur John O'Hurley '76, who is best known as "J. Peterman" on the popular Seinfeld TV program, will deliver the keynote address at the College's Commencement Exercises on May 21, 2006. He is one of five distinguished individuals who will receive honorary degrees that day. The group includes another alumnus, the Honorable Donald F. Shea '50, retired Rhode Island Supreme Court justice.

Dr. Hugh F. Lena appointed academic affairs VP
Calling
him "an extraordinary administrator," College President Rev. Brian J.
Shanley, O.P. '80 appointed PC's own Dr. Hugh F. Lena as vice president
for academic affairs in mid-February. Lena, who has been a member of
the College faculty for more than 30 years, had served as acting vice
president
since July 2004.

New executive director of financial aid begins duties
The College recently welcomed Sandra J. Oliveira as its new executive director of financial aid. Oliveira has more than 20 years experience in the field of financial aid. She said she intends to work "creatively" to provide families with a range of financial aid options.

Dr. & Mrs. Vincent L. Hughes Scholarship Fund established
The newly created Dr. & Mrs. Vincent L. Hughes Scholarship Fund will provide scholarships to science majors who have a special interest in philosophy or bio-ethics. The fund was initiated recently by Eileen Hughes in memory of her husband, Dr. Vincent L. Hughes '48, who died two years ago. [more]
High drama on national TV for 1970 alumnus
When Dr. Roy Peter Clark '70 wrote a satirical essay that appeared in the Los Angeles Times about James Frey's discredited memoir, A Million Little Pieces, he got a call inviting him to appear on a rare live edition of The Oprah Winfrey Show. He also found himself witness to "reality TV" when Winfrey publicly denounced the book, the author, and the publisher. [more]

The
Providence College Alumni Club of New York invites you to march in the
245th New York City St. Patrick's Day Parade on Friday, March 17. The
PC delegation will include Raymond L. Flynn '63 & '84Hon., former U.S.
ambassador to the Vatican and former mayor of Boston, Mass. [more]
Reunion Weekend 2006 plans quickly taking shape
Reunion Weekend 2006, scheduled
for June 2-4 for all classes ending in '1 or '6, will
be a true welcome home party, with all events hosted
on campus. There will be trolley bus and walking tours,
parties, a barbecue, academic presentations, and a
semi-formal dinner-dance. Formal invitations to the
weekend will be sent out in April. For up-to-date information

Friar teams take aim at postseason laurels
Mary Cullen '06, who has qualified in the mile and the 3,000- and 5,000-meter runs, heads a list of four members of the PC women's and men's indoor track teams who have qualified for the NCAA Division I Championship this month. Meanwhile, both the Friars' men's and women's ice hockey teams have qualified for the postseason HOCKEY EAST Tournament. [more]
