Father Sicard appointed next executive VP
Rev. Kenneth Sicard, O.P. ’78 & ’82G, dean of residence life since 1997, has been selected to serve as executive vice president in the next administration at the College. His appointment is the first to be made by Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P. ’80, who recently was elected to serve as PC’s 12th president. Both executive officers will begin their new positions on July 1, 2005. [more]


Helen Bert Gala to spotlight women’s athletics
The College will celebrate the life and legacy of the late Helen A. Bert, the founder of the women’s athletics program, at a special event on April 16. The Helen Bert Gala, to be held at The Westin Providence, will honor the accomplishments of women’s athletics at PC. Open to the College community, it is sponsored by the Office of Institutional Advancement and the Department of Athletics. Proceeds will support the women’s athletics program. [more]

Randall Distinguished Professor gives lecture
Rev. Aidan Nichols, O.P. presented his first lecture as the Rev. Robert Randall Distinguished Professor in Christian Culture on February 23 at the College. A renowned historical theologian, Father Nichols is an affiliated lecturer at the University of Cambridge in England. He is the second recipient of the Randall Professorship, which is the College’s first endowed chair. [more]

Liberal Arts Honors Program to welcome scholar
Scholar and author Dr. Jocelyne Cesari, who is a visiting associate professor of Islamic studies at the Harvard Divinity School, will present a lecture, “Islam and Democracy in the Global Era,” on Thursday, March 17, at 7:00 p.m. in Slavin Center ’64 Hall. Her presentation is sponsored by the Liberal Arts Honors Program. All members of the College community are invited. [more]

Celebrating PC’s women grads, then and now
The Women’s Involvement Network of Providence College will celebrate its fifth anniversary and 30 years of women graduates at PC with a special event on Thursday, March 31. The evening program will include a light-fare reception at the Pavilion in Suites Hall and a slide show and panel discussion in the Angell Blackfriars Theatre of the Smith Center for the Arts. The slide show will feature images from the past three decades, while the panel will comprise two alumnae from each decade. [more]

Fred M. Roddy Foundation pledges additional funds
The Fred M. Roddy Foundation, Inc. has extended its scholarship support to the College with a pledge of nearly $200,000 over the next three years. In addition to the direct scholarships it provides to deserving students who plan careers in medicine, the foundation has established an endowed scholarship. Since 2002, the foundation has pledged $390,000 in student financial support. [more]

Gomes shoots to top of PC career scoring list
All-American Ryan Gomes ’05 (Waterbury, Conn.) added glitter to his star-studded basketball career by becoming PC’s all-time leading scorer in the Friars’ 67-54 victory over Seton Hall on February 23. Gomes broke the 38-year-old record of 2,045 career points—held by Jimmy Walker ’67—when he sank a three-pointer from the left wing with 9:14 to play. The 6-7, 240-pound forward scored 19 points and finished the game with 2,048 career points. His eight rebounds also gave him 1,001 for his career, making him the fifth Friar to reach 1,000 rebounds.

• The PC Web site has experienced a 31% average monthly increase in site visits since it was redesigned 18 months ago. And, it recently earned the highest score among the College’s top eight admission competitors in East Coast focus groups comprising high school juniors and seniors.
• Despite a sub-.500 record, the men’s basketball team played before four sell-out crowds at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center this season and attracted 164,235 fans in its 17 regular season home games—the fourth-highest total among BIG EAST Conference schools.
