It’s
official: Call it the Concannon Fitness Center
The
College’s new 23,000-square-foot fitness and training facility
that is nearing completion will be called the Concannon Fitness Center.
College President Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P. '80
made the announcement at a Board of Trustees meeting on June 8. The center
will be named for trustee William F. Concannon '77, who contributed a leadership gift of $2
million for the facility in January. [more]
Gala for 1987 Friars raises a record $200,000-plus
Last
month’s tribute to the Friars’ 1987 NCAA Final Four men’s
basketball team attracted 1,200 people and raised more than $200,000
for the Friar Athletic Fund. The proceeds represent the highest single-event
fundraising total in Department of Athletics history. The evening of
nostalgia featured
recollections of the team’s magical journey to New Orleans by then-Head
Coach Rick Pitino, star player Billy Donovan '87, and other team

Deadline nears for national alumni awards event
Ticket
requests for the 2007 National Alumni Association Awards Presentation
on June 23 will be accepted online until June 18. Six distinguished
alumni will be honored
during the program, which will begin at 6:00 p.m. in the Smith Center
for the Arts. It will be followed by a buffet-dinner reception
on the East
Campus quadrangle. For more information and to register, click

Alumni share commencement spotlight
Arn
Chorn-Pond '92, Brother Lawrence Goyette, F.S.C. '72, and
former PC men’s basketball coach and athletic director Dave Gavitt '89Hon.
were among several individuals honored during the College’s recent
Eighty-Ninth Commencement Exercises. Chorn-Pond and Brother Lawrence
received honorary degrees, while Gavitt was presented the Veritas
Medal.
In all,
1,288 diplomas were awarded to members of the Class of 2007. For more

Graduating seniors recognized during Legacy Brunch
Graduating
seniors who are the sons and daughters of PC alumni, faculty, and staff
were welcomed into the College’s Alumni Association during the Legacy
Brunch on Commencement Weekend. The event was attended by 185 people
and featured
a champagne brunch, gifts to the students, and a speaking program. [more]
Four Friars competing in NCAA outdoor track meet
Four
Friar track athletes either qualified outright or were chosen to compete
in the 2007 NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Outdoor
Track and Field Championships on June 6-9 in Sacramento, Calif. Representing
PC are graduate student Aine Hoban (competing in the 10,000-meter
run), Katie DiCamillo ' (5,000 meters), Danette Doetzel '09
(5,000 meters), and Max Smith '08 (1,500 meters). To follow their

Friar Golf Classic rescheduled for October
The
2007 Friar Golf Classic, which was rained out on June 4, will be rescheduled
in October at the Warwick (R.I.) Country Club. For information and

Did you know?
• Dave Gavitt became the 15th recipient in the 47-year history of the Veritas Medal when he received the College's highest honor at this year's Commencement Exercises.
• The College recently hosted the Third Annual New England Undergraduate Philosophy Conference for the third consecutive year, featuring 20 paper presentations by students from schools across the region, including PC, Brown, Princeton, and Barnard.
