Father Smith receives two honorary degrees
Rev. Philip A. Smith, O.P., whose 11-year term as the College's 11th president ends on June 30, was awarded two honorary degrees in May. Father Smith received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree and served as commencement speaker during Caldwell College's 63rd Commencement on May 22. Father Smith taught religious studies from 1970-81 at Caldwell, which is a liberal arts college sponsored by the Sisters of St. Dominic of Caldwell in Caldwell, N.J. He received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree during the 237th Commencement of Brown University in Providence on May 29.

Last call for end-of-fiscal-year Annual Fund gifts
There's still time to make a gift to the College's Annual Fund in this fiscal year. By making a donation by June 30, you will ensure that your name will be included in the 2005 donor book. New gifts or payments on outstanding pledges can be made online by clicking here or by calling the Office of Institutional Advancement at 401-865-2405. The Annual Fund provides critical unrestricted funds that give PC the flexibility to address current needs and to supplement the College's commitment to financial aid.

Did you know?
• Since 1988, Providence College has enrolled the highest percentage of students among Rhode Island higher-education institutions in the Brown [University] Medical School through its Early Identification Program (EIP). Fifty-two percent, or 34, of the 65 Rhode Island EIP students who have entered the Brown Medical School were from PC.
• Among current deposits for students entering the Class of 2009 at PC, 10.9 percent, or 120, have been identified as "first-generation" college students. That is, neither parent has had any college education at all. This compares with 9.5 percent, or 99 students, for the Class of 2008.
