Father Shanley pleased with accreditation report
Expressing
satisfaction, College President Rev. Brian J. Shanley,
O.P. ’80 recently released the 33-page report from the accreditation
team that evaluated PC in October. The team representing the
New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Inc. (NEASC) sent
its confidential recommendation on accreditation to NEASC’s Commission
on Institutions of Higher Education in December. The College expects
a final decision

Surge of generosity boosts Father Smith scholarship fund
An
outpouring of donations following the death of former College President
Rev. Philip A. Smith, O.P. ’63 has brought the scholarship fund named
in his honor to more than $33,700. The fund will assist first-generation
college students and other undergraduates. [more]

Athletic Hall of Fame induction tickets on sale
Tickets
are still available for the 2008 Providence College Athletic Hall of
Fame Induction Reception on Saturday, February 16, at 6:00 p.m. at
the Hilton
Providence hotel. Fourteen former Friar athletes and coaches will be
inducted. The dinner program will include special recognition of seven
PC alumnae
who were members of the 1998 gold medal-winning U.S. Women’s Olympic

The
Office of Institutional Advancement is encouraging alumni in class
years ending in 3 and 8 to participate in a reunion-giving program.
Those classes
will be celebrating their reunions at Reunion Weekend 2008 on May 30

Four
PC alumni who are prominent in the world of sports have taped a series
of public service announcements (PSAs) that will air this winter on
local and regional telecasts involving Friar athletic teams. The
four—Doris Burke ’87 & ’92G (right), Richard Gotham ’86,
Joe Hassett ’77, and Sean McAdam ’81—are featured in
30-second video spots that are intended to further position PC’s
distinctive brand of higher education in the minds of television sports

great Cammi Granato ’93 nets three honors
Four-time
ECAC women’s ice hockey all-star Cammi Granato ’93, who will
be inducted into PC’s Athletic Hall of Fame next month, recently
received two more honors. In December, Granato became the
first woman named for induction into the International Ice Hockey Federation
Hall of Fame. A month earlier, she was presented with a 2007 Lester
Patrick
Award by the NHL and USA Hockey “in recognition of outstanding service
to hockey in the United States.” [more]
Friars boast impressive records on the court
PC’s
women’s basketball team, with a 10-4 overall record, has recorded
a double-digit victory total for the second year
in a row, while the men’s
basketball team stands at a solid 9-5. For the latest in Friar winter
