Sciences research labs renovation nears completion
The
$4.2 million renovation of the sciences laboratories in Hickey Hall
is scheduled to be completed this month—a little more than six months
after construction began. The refurbished building will feature twice
the amount of research
lab space for faculty and students in the departments of biology, engineering-physics-systems,
and chemistry and biochemistry. [more]
First director of emergency management appointed
Koren
V. Kanadanian, a former Massachusetts police officer with extensive
emergency response training, has been named the College’s first director
of emergency management. His appointment culminates a thorough review
of the Emergency
Response Plan that has resulted in a new notification system, a specially
equipped Emergency Operations Center, and more. [more]
Father Shanley’s essay published in Harvard journal
An
essay written by President Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P. ’80 about the
College’s effort to close the “student accessibility gap” appears
in the current Winter 2007 edition of the Harvard Educational Review,
a prestigious scholarly journal of opinion and research. The essay
focuses on a pilot program

under way to name weight room in Walker’s memory
The
Department of Athletics is conducting a $500,000 fund-raising campaign
throughout the 2007-08 men’s basketball season to memorialize
Friar All-American Jimmy Walker ’67. The campaign, which includes
a benefit dinner next month, aims to rename the varsity student-athlete
weight room in the new Concannon Fitness Center after Walker, who

concert to raise funds for music scholarships
The
Department of Music and the Office of Institutional Advancement are
sponsoring a concert to raise scholarship funds so music students
with financial need
can attend PC. The Department of Music Celebratory Concert will be
held on Saturday, April 19, on campus. It will include solo and ensemble
works by students, faculty, and alumni. [more]New
York alumni to march in St. Patrick’s Day parade
For
the third consecutive year, the Providence College Club of New York
has been invited to march in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in New
York City on Monday, March 17. All alumni are invited to participate.
Marchers
should arrive no later than 12:15 p.m. outside of 50 West 46th
Street between 5th and 6th avenues. To participate, marchers must purchase
a
club parade sash for $10 online by registering here.

the date for Cabernet Cabaret on June 13
The
third annual Cabernet Cabaret wine tasting will take place in the new
Concannon Fitness Center on Friday, June 13. Doors will open at 6:30
p.m. All proceeds will benefit PC’s National Alumni Association
Scholarship Fund. The evening will feature wines from all regions of
Italy and New-World
Argentinean wines. There will be an array of auction items including
a chance to bid on sporting event tickets and travel packages. For

Men’s hockey, runner McLaren steal headlines
In
Friar athletics highlights, the men’s ice hockey team is nationally
ranked and indoor track standout Hayden McLaren ’10 (Christchurch,
New Zealand) broke the four-minute mark in the mile at the Terrier
Invitational in Boston recently. For the latest in sports results,
