Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P. ’80 elected 12th College president Providence College announced on February 1 the election of Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P. ’80 to serve as the 12th president of the College. The announcement followed separate deliberations held by the Board of Trustees and members of the College Corporation.
Father Shanley, age 46, serves as an associate professor in the School of Philosophy at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He will assume his office at Providence College on July 1, 2005.

Class of 2005 awaits Brokaw’s words at commencement Tom Brokaw, the former NBC Nightly News anchor who reported on the major events that shaped our lives, has accepted the College’s offer to present the keynote address at Commencement Exercises on May 15, 2005. “In September 2001, the freshman class of 2005 had barely settled into college when their lives, and all of our lives, changed forever,” recalled College President Rev. Philip A. Smith, O.P., adding that Brokaw’s “presence and words will be a memorable conclusion to their college years.” [more]
Classroom renovation campaign hits 87 percent Steaming along. That is the best way to describe the College’s “Celebrating Our Classrooms” drive to raise $400,000 annually to renovate and enhance the teaching and learning environment on campus. As of late January, the Office of Institutional Advancement had realized 87 percent of the goal for this fiscal year with the help of reunion classes from 1960 through 2000. More assistance is needed, however. [more]
Come home for Homecoming! The College has stacked the calendar for Homecoming Weekend 2005. Topping the bill are the National Alumni Association Awards Dinner and a tribute to the 1973 NCAA Final Four Friars. Also planned are a young alumni social, alumni and student concerts, the men’s basketball game against Notre Dame, women’s and men’s ice hockey contests, and the alumni Mass and brunch. [more]
Six alumni association honorees named Six outstanding alumni/ae will be recognized at the Providence College National Alumni Association Awards Dinner during Homecoming Weekend 2005 on Friday, February 18, at the Providence Biltmore hotel. This year’s award recipients are Raymond Levesque ’50, Rev. Raymond F. Halligan, O.P. ’55, Major W. Wheelock ’58, Rev. Francis J. Hicks ’63, Linda Morad ’76, and Daniel McMorrow ’85. Smith runs away with Honda award Five-time cross country and track All-American Kim Smith ’05 (Auckland, New Zealand) was named the recipient of the Honda Sports Award for Cross Country in December. She is the first Friar to win the award in cross country in its 29-year history. Honda presents the award to one female in 12 different NCAA sports. Smith capped off an undefeated season in November by becoming the first female from PC to win the NCAA Cross Country Championship.
