Fitness center construction reaches a high point
The College and construction workers celebrated a significant point in the ongoing work at the new fitness center with a "topping-off" ceremony on December 5. A construction industry tradition, the ceremony acknowledges the placement of the final structural element -a steel beam in this case- in the construction phase. [more]

Homecoming promises a taste of everything
Activities for Homecoming Weekend on January 19-21, 2007, offer a mixture of the festive and the reflective. There will be receptions, several Friar sporting events, an a capella concert, new admission policies, and more. [more]

Associate VP for institutional advancement named
Edward Chiu has been appointed as the College's new associate vice president for institutional advancement. Chiu served for the last three years as the director of operations for institutional advancement at St. John's University. He is the second senior management team member in institutional advancement to be appointed in as many months. [more]

Boston President's Council convenes for first time
College President Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P. '80 led a delegation of PC officials to the inaugural meeting of the Boston President's Council. The main item on the agenda was the newly established School of Business. Michael Joyce '84 (right), a partner with Richards Barry Joyce & Partners, LLC, is the council's first chair. [more]

Brother and sister start scholarship fund
In establishing the Reilly Family Scholarship Fund, Deirdre Reilly Prescott '85 and her brother Robert '86 are formalizing their longtime generosity to their alma mater. They are hoping that others will follow their example and establish endowed scholarships as well. [more]

Calling all "Parents for Providence"
"Parents for Providence," which courts the talents, dedication, and enthusiasm of parents of PC students, is seeking parents to participate in the revitalized program. Created to promote events and raise money for the College’s Annual Fund, it "helps other parents understand why the giving of their time and the giving of their resources are so important," says Lauren Jordan, assistant director of annual giving. Help wanted in dialing for dollars at PC
Students and regional alumni are being sought to work on phonathons that help raise money for the College’s Annual Fund. "It's really neat to talk to people who love the school as much as I do," says one student volunteer, Liz Crowley '08 of Andover, Mass. [more]

Year-end tax-incentive reminder
As the end of the year approaches, donors who are age 70½ and older are reminded they can make tax-free charitable donations to the College from their IRA accounts. Tax-free contribution amounts can range up to $100,000. For more on this recently enacted federal legislation for gifts made in 2006 and 2007, contact Joseph P. Basketball teams on fast breaks
The Friars' women's and men's basketball teams are off to high-flying starts this season with records of 7-3 and 6-2, respectively. In other sports highlights, both the women's (seventh) and men's (ninth) cross country teams posted top-10 performances in the recent NCAA Championship, the men's soccer team ended a fine season (13-7-0) with an NCAA Tournament appearance, and two members of the field hockey team, Lauren Sickel '07 and Rachel Chamberlain '10, were selected as All-Americans. Tickets on sale for tribute to 1987 Friars
Plan now to join the gala 20th anniversary celebration of the 1987 men's basketball team's trip to the NCAA Final Four. The tribute will be held on May 12, 2007, at 7:00 p.m. at the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence. Tables of 10 can be reserved for $1,500, and general admission tickets are $87. • Christmas crèche exhibit from the collection of Rev. Matthew D. Powell, O.P., associate professor of theatre arts, is on display weekdays in the Center for Catholic and Dominican Studies through December 19 and again from January 3-8, 2007. To view crèche images, click here.
• The renovations to St. Catherine of Siena Hall, which was blessed during a ceremony led by College President Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P. on November 17, include the creation of an oratory on the first floor.
