Our objective was to examine six shows over a three week period (total of nine viewing hours) for their racial segregation and diversity or their lack of diversity. The shows are "Mad About You", "Seinfeld", "Friends", (All with predominantly white casts) "In the House", "Jamie Foxx", and "Sister-Sister" (All with predominately African American casts.) In examining the racial segregation and the lack of diversity of the shows, a focus was put on the racially homogeneous cast. Also, how the minority (black or white) characters were depicted on the show, background in which they were depicted and their significance (speaking or nonspeaking role) to the story line. |
